Why I Love My $12 Jeans and Where You Too Can Get Some

>> Thursday, September 2, 2010

Welcome to Mummy Deals!
If you're looking for ways to save money on your grocery bill, you've come to the right place. Consider subscribing to a daily (spam-free) email update or my RSS feed. Did you enter all the Giveaways yet?

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Dollar General. All opinions are 100% mine.

There's 3 things I hate shopping for and I'm sure I'm not alone:
  1. Jeans
  2. Bathing suits
  3. Undies
The latter two are just painful items to shop for especially as I contemplate fitting into a bathing suit. Pregnant. Yikes! But, I dislike shopping for jeans because they never seem to fit me. I discovered a while ago that I must still have an English body (is there such a thing?) because the jeans here don't seem to feel as good as the ones I've bought back home and therefore I've joined a growing number of my girlfriends who spend copious amounts of money on jeans just to get a pair that fits just right. The ones that don't make you look too big or end up right under your nose. The kind that aren't all in fashion so they stay on when you bend over. Come on, you know what I mean!!!

Anyway, last week I was offered a pair of Bobbie Brooks jeans to try out from the Dollar General. Yes, I too sniggered at the thought of a pair of cheap jeans being able to do what a pair of $50 ones couldn't. Oh how wrong I was!

Although no-one need ever tell Hubby this, sometimes I'm happy to be proven wrong! And I'm always happy to find something that's as good as the expensive stuff but costs less. For as low as $12 a pair you could own a pair of women's 5-pocket stretch jeans that are available only at Dollar General.

What I liked about them first of all was the color. You know those cheap jeans who's color is a contrast between stonewashed and just plain yak? Or the kind like Michael has in The Office that are way too rigid? Well these are super cute (see above) and the sizing was great too (yes I accounted for my bulging belly when ordering!)

The second thing I liked was they didn't gape and gather in the wrong places (read: my hips) yet neither did they ride up my belly or down my bottom. They were a fab fit.

I tried them on and wandered the house and Hubs was suitably impressed. Had it been less than 80 degrees around here I may have worn them out but ya know...!

The bobbie brooks at Dollar General jeans are definitely a win-win situation for me. My only complaint was that they were a little long but with a hem they'll be fab.

So, do you think you could buy jeans from the Dollar General? Leave a comment and let me know!

Budget Boot Camp Challenge X and Giveaway From Sports Authority (2 WINNERS!)

Welcome to Mummy Deals!

90-Day Budget Boot Camp - Challenge #X + Giveaway

This is Challenge #X, sponsored by Sport's Authority, in the 90-Day Budget Boot Camp. Scroll down to find out how to enter their exciting giveaway for an awesome sports umbrella valued at $69.99! If you're new, find out how you can join to kick your own budget's butt!

The Challenge

Think about one thing your family purchases that you could do without to save money - paper towels? Disposable diapers? Now, go without it for the week. How did it effect your life? How would it effect your budget if you no longer purchased it? What other items could you family do without? Plus your experience and if you were successful or not.

My Journey to Rid My World of Disposables

For years we've been a family of convenience. I love my Swiffer and all the refills that go with it, I really hate the thought of discarding Ziploc bags and baby wipes seem to be the best way to wipe up little messes, right??? What started as a blog experiment last year (yup, friends, I even do research for you!) has turned into a war against the disposables in our house. Here are 4 Ways I decided to go without to inspire you. I did them in part for the earth and in part for our budget.

Dish Washing Cloths

Our kitchen sponge smelt. Again. I'd put it in the microwave several times to try and get the smell off but it just gets yucky after a couple of weeks so I took action and on a shopping trip to Target I purchased 12 washcloths for $2.99. They're perfect size and super cheap. From now on my dishes that can't go in the dishwasher will be washed with the cloths. One small step accomplished.

Baby Wipes

My friend is always cleaning up messes with baby wipes and after getting so many for cheap a while ago, I started to use them like they were going out of fashion. Until I remembered that they were going to end up in a landfill someday. Some of you may hate me for this but I can't bring myself to use cloth diapers so I want to help by not using too much disposables like unnecessary wipes. Instead we have the washcloths on hand and I use those for wiping up Isaac's face.
**If you'd like to try and make some check out this quick recipe.

Cleaning Cloths

My Swiffer was a hard one to do but this was more a cost issue. I hated the price of refills but loved the Swiffer. One day my MIL came home with some microfiber cloths and announced that she'd read somewhere that you could use a cloth on the bottom of your Swiffer and it worked just as good. I tried it and sure enough, it works. In fact, it works really well. I cut them in half as I find it fits better and away we go.

Ziploc Bags

Finally, the almighty ziploc challenge. Yak! I love ziplocs and their convenience. I love quickly bagging things up for later and hate to waste. I realise that tupperwares are cheaper and better for the envirnoment so I tried it. This one is a work in progress let me tell you but I'm on it. For the money and for the earth. In Thailand we'd wash them out all the time as they were expensive. Of course we didn't put raw meat in them and do that but still we washed them and then stuck them to the wall (yuppers, who knew they'd stick!) to dry. Now back here and I'm back to my old habits. Some die hard I guess. I've started being conscious of what I'm saving and getting out a tupperware. It's amazing what blog pressure (unbeknowest to you guys!) can do for me. I feel accountable and with it the ziplocs have lessened.
PS one thing that really helped me was buying glass containers. See my tips here.

Paper towels are in our house but honestly rarely used so I wasn't too concerned with that. I'm not perfect. Some of my journey has come from money saving but a lot of it has been motivated by the earth and the fact that my children will one day pay for all the rubbish we throw out. No, I'm not a cloth diaperer but I'm doing my part for the earth. :>)

Here are Beth's ideas to help you along.

Just in time for Labor Day, Sports Authority is offering the Sports umbrella to 2 lucky winners. YUP 2 people! As a kid my parents had a windbreaker but this is much more advanced and perfect for the beach and other places. Easy to set up (it took Hubby 2 minutes), it even comes in a case and complete with a carrying handle. Plus it's protection from not only the wind but the sun with UPF 50 + protection. You can check it out more here.
